H. G. Wells, full Herbert George Wells, (1866-1946) was an English novelist, journalist, sociologist, and historian, best known for such science fiction novels. This story is taken from the collection The Country of the Blind and other Short Stories. ‘The Treasure in the Forest’ is an ominous adventure story in which two men search for Spanish treasure, letting greed get the better of their awareness. The story is a suspicious story about two treasure hunters, Evans and Hooker, who killed a Chinese man to steal his map, pointing to a secret archive of gold ingots. Hooker scanned a map, the narrator had revealed that they had stolen it from Chang-hi, a Chinese man they had killed during a robbery. Chang-hi came across the spoils of Spanish warfare and chose to bury it somewhere, according to his map. Although the map was inaccurate, the island was clearly visible.

Evans and Hooker are baffled by one aspect of the map: part of it is covered with dashboards. They found the location on a map and then paddled their canoe through the island, traversing the jungle. They found a pile of stones on the map at once, but next to it lay the purple and emaciated body (corpse) of a Chinese boy who was apparently digging for treasure, as he could see the yellow gold metal that was partially exposed. the pit he had dug.

According to the boys, the Chinese man was one of Chang hi's supporters who decided to try to seize the treasure. Evans starts picking up the gold nipples to put them back in the boat, but he gets bitten by a thorn.
